12 Angry Men
The story begins after the judge’s closing statement in a murder case gives instructions to the jury. According to American law, the jury’s verdict (guilty or not guilty) must be unanimous. A decision not taken unanimously means that the jury dissolves itself and the case is retried.
The issue that the jury must decide is whether a child suspect living in the poor part of the city killed his father. The jury is also informed that if the defendant is found guilty, the penalty will be death penalty (electric chair).
Afterwards, the twelve jurors enter the jury room, where they discuss the case and get to know each other’s personalities.
The next plot of the film revolves around the difficulties the jury members face in reaching consensus, which in some cases is based on prejudices. The 8th jury expresses a different opinion in the first vote.
The eighth jury states that the evidence is circumstantial and that the child deserves a fair hearing. The credibility and certainty of having only two murder witnesses added to the interrogation.
It starts by considering that the knife used in the murder is not unique as stated (he takes the same knife used in the murder from his pocket and shows it to other members) and other suspicious circumstances.
The fiercest rivals of jury number eight, the 3rd, 4th and 10th juries, said that the child’s argument was terrible,
They state that he did not remember any details about the movie he claimed to have seen on the night of the murder and that he was sufficiently motivated to kill his father.
Those who defend the not guilty verdict say that the child’s lack of memory can be explained by a panic attack, that the old man among the witnesses may have been trying to attract attention, and that the other may have witnessed the murder without his glasses. As the deliberation continues, the jury members will decide on the 9th, 5th, 11th, 2nd, 6th, 7th, 12th, 1st, 4th, 10th, and finally the 3rd places.
The jury, one by one, begins to move towards a not guilty verdict.
